GLOBE is a hands-on,
primary and secondary school-based science and education program uniting students,
teachers, scientists and community members around the world in study and
research about the dynamics of the Earth's environment. Working in close
partnership with NASA and NSF large-scale Earth System Science Projects
(ESSPs), the GLOBE Schools Network consists of over a million GLOBE
students led by more than 40,000 teachers in more than 20,000 schools
located in 109 countries. GLOBE students have taken important environmental
measurements focusing on Earth system science connections. More than 16
million measurements in the areas of Atmosphere/Climate, Hydrology, Soil,
Land Cover/Biology and Phenology have been entered into the GLOBE database.
The data from these measurements are used in their own research activities
as well as by students and scientists around the world.
Here at Pinon School, the first step in implementing GLOBE was the
installation of our new Panther Weather Station. The equipment is very
high-quality and is reporting its data in near real-time to the posted
web-links. The weather station was purchased with PTO funds; my thanks go
out to all our parents and PTO officers!
A second important milestone was recently achieved; the establishment of a
Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) sponsored GLOBE Partnership. The
Deputy Director of the GLOBE Program has granted LANL formal partnership
status for our state. This collaboration enables GLOBE teacher resources to
flow directly into our classrooms, and for all of our Lab employees to
volunteer in the classroom on Laboratory time with supervisor approval. I
look forward to sharing more information about this exciting opportunity to
enrich or children’s experience at Pinon. Please share and enjoy Panther
weather data with your children and the whole community!
Sincerely,
Rollin Lakis
